Mobile Robotics

One robot for several machines with long cycles, a palletizer that comes to the line instead of the other way round, a carrier for samples and work in progress: a cobot on an autonomous mobile robot does those jobs without a rail and without a fixed layout. The hard part is the last millimetre.

At a trade fair, a cobot on an autonomous mobile robot stacks boxes on a pallet at its station.
IROCUBE Mobile: a cobot on an autonomous mobile robot (AMR), here palletizing at a trade fair.

Three jobs for a robot on wheels

Our mobile solution is IROCUBE Mobile: a cobot on an AMR, with our calibration and our fleet software.

  1. 01

    Machine tending

Several machines with long cycle times, one mobile cell that visits each of them in turn. No rail, no fixed layout: when a machine moves, the route changes, not the floor.

  2. 02

    Palletizing

Boxes from several stations to the right pallet, by destination, order or customer. One adaptive gripper, servo-driven and force-controlled, handles different box sizes and weights, and a busy season is met with another unit rather than a new line.

  3. 03

    Intralogistics

From the warehouse to the line, quality samples to metrology, work in progress between lines, maintenance equipment to where it is needed, and nonconforming product to quarantine.

The last millimetre

An AMR is good at finding its way across a hall and poor at stopping exactly where a chuck needs it. We solved the second part.

  1. 01

The AMR docks to a few millimetres

It navigates by LiDAR, wheel odometry and SLAM, and at the station it repeats to about 2 to 3 mm. Enough for a pallet, not for a chuck or a fixture.

  2. 02

    The camera closes the gap

A camera on the gripper photographs a target at the station. The offset is computed and the cobot’s positions are corrected to ±0.2 mm, in under a second, at every docking. The accuracy comes from the arm, not from the wheels.

  3. 03

    Rail or wheels

A robot on a rail wears and loses precision, one stop stops everything, the layout is built around the rail, and adding capacity means a longer rail. A mobile cobot recalibrates itself at every station, the other stations keep running while one is stopped, it works with the layout you have, and more capacity is another unit.

  4. 04

    FleetBridge keeps them in order

Our fleet software dispatches the jobs, optimises routes and tasks, and hands a job over when a robot is charging, paused or in maintenance.

Partners, limits, and where to see it

  • The platform

AMRs from Milvus Robotics, the SEIT 300S, SEIT 500 and SEIT 1500S, with FANUC CRX cobots from 5 to 30 kg payload. Our first cobot on a Milvus AMR ran in 2024; IROCUBE Mobile is the product that came out of it.

  • Where it fits, and where it does not

It fits long cycles and several machines, where each machine can wait while the robot serves the others. For one machine with a very short cycle, a fixed cell with an industrial robot is the better choice.

  • See it move

The IROCUBE Mobile demo and the first integration are on our video page, and the solution has its own page.
